There are many reasons why over time we have a tendency to be less connected to our bodies. We may have had life experiences that were so intense that we no longer want to feel sensations in our bodies and/or we were raised in a way where the signals and communication of our body were overridden - usually by our rational minds!
Here are some common solutions that are offered: "be more present", "feel the sensations in your body" and "be more grounded". These all make perfect sense but HOW do you actually do it?! Once we can connect to our bodies, how do all the different parts of our body support and guide us? For example, how DO you follow your heart?
This is where Suzanne Scurlock Durana's second book, Reclaiming Your Body: Healing from Trauma and Awakening to Your Body's Wisdom, will help you. I had the privilege of brainstorming with Suzanne as she wrote her book and watch it take shape plus participate in her classes as she taught the practical aspects of this book. I have been able to bring these pearls of wisdom into my treatment room. I'm seeing amazing results!
Suzanne says, "The body has its own language that is older and more primal than most of us realize. Most of us are conditioned at a very young age to turn off this inner guidance system of sensation, imagery and inner knowing. Our priceless body wisdom is getting lost as our culture speeds up and becomes more technology-driven."
Reclaiming Your Body empowers every one of us to reconnect with our body's inherent guidance system. The book also explains how unresolved trauma becomes lodged in the body, blocking its ability to share its wisdom and strategies. This can cause us to flounder, remain in unsafe situations, and even end up living a life that isn't ours while the whole time our body is madly signaling us with the very solutions we seek.
It also includes Chapters for each main "wisdom area" of the body including the heart, gut, pelvis, legs and feet, bones, and brain. Suzanne explores these areas of the body, and provides details about the unique roles each one plays. At the end of each of these Chapters, she provides practical explorations that you can also download. For me, this is so important as it provides the reader with tools to create meaningful change. As you can tell, I am very excited to see this book published! I hope you will agree with me once you have had a chance to read this book!
I am also excited to be teaching a one-day Introduction to Full Body Presence workshop on September 30th with my colleague Meghan McGrath. We'll have both of Suzanne's books for sale, Reclaiming Your Body and Full Body Presence. On October 1st, I'm teaching ShareCare (an introduction to CranioSacral Therapy) with my colleague Robyn Scherr. If you attend both workshops, an Introduction to Full Body Presence and ShareCare, you will get a free copy of Reclaiming Your Body and my book, From my Hands and Heart.
